Perseid Meteor Shower

The 2015 Perseid meteor shower will peak on August 11, 12 and 13. A new moon on August 14, 2015 will create perfect conditions for watching the meteor shower.

The Perseid meteor shower, one of the brighter meteor showers of the year, occur every year between July 17 and August 24. The shower tends to peak around August 9-13.

The best time to view the Perseids, or most other meteor showers is when the sky is the darkest. Most astronomers suggest that depending on the Moon’s phase, the best time to view meteor showers is right before dawn.

Power Outage, 7-Aug-2015

Today, 7-Augr-2015, the FoxCreek community experienced a power outage from 2:35pm to 4:38 pm.

Communities from Milton/Liverpool up to the Camperdown/Lapland area and including E/W Berlin, Port/East Port Medway, Voglers Cove, Cherry Hill and Broad Cove were also affected.

Edit: 8-Aug-2015
The outage was caused by a crane collapsing on power lines in Milton.
See here for details …

FOXweather was not affected and data was updated and broadcasted during the outage.
FOXlive was updated but unable to broadcast its data.

All is well at the time of this post.

FOXweather down due to lightning stroke

Last night a heavy thunderstorm passed over Queens county and quite a few flashes occurred close to FOXweather.
This sadly caused some weather equipment to spark resulting in a station outage from 4-Aug-2015/22:52 ADT to 23:54 ADT.

All systems could be recovered and no data was lost.
However the FOXcam Southwest got damaged and needs replacement. This will take a few days. Stay tuned.

25% of funds raised go to improvements of the Warehouse building.

We invite you all to come have a look at the works of our local artists and possibly help with the Warehouse building improvements – a building at the Port Medway Lighthouse Park where a lot is happening this summer. Check out the event calendar.

DYK: Blue Moon on 31-Jul-2015

You might have used the term ‘once in a blue Moon‘ before – a colloquial phrase to suggest that something is very rare. But just how rare, depends on your definition.

In astronomy there are two definitions of a Blue Moon; both are a type of Full Moon. Here Blue Moon is defined as either (1) the third full Moon of an astronomical season with four full Moons or (2) the second full Moon in a calendar month.

Such a Blue Moon as defined in (2) will next occur on Friday, 31-Jul-2015 at 10:43am UTC (7:43am ADT) – July/2015 therefore has two full moons; on the 1st (11:20pm ADT) and 31st of July (7:43am ADT). Continue reading DYK: Blue Moon on 31-Jul-2015

Jupiter and Venus Conjunction

Where you outside last night, Tuesday, 30-Jun-2015? Did you happen to look up in the sky? And perhaps wondering what these two bright lights high up there where: satellites, ISS, stars, airplanes?

None of the above. After a slow summer dance as Venus and Jupiter have sidled up to one another over the month of June, last night on 30-Jun-2015, they rendezvoused close enough to kiss – only a fraction of a degree apart. And one could see this rare spectacle in the sky even without telescopes.

Although the planets will appear to draw near one another in August and again in October, the next such event to rival last night’s won’t happen until 2023. And as the two planets will appear to be close together, in reality, millions of miles of empty space separate them.

The Medway Area Through Time

MedwayArea.org happily announces that the bi-annual Port Medway History Show is back!

The show is a celebration of the history of the Medway River area from Port Medway up river to Mill Village, Charleston and Greenfield, spanning the approximate 10,000 years from the retreat of the glaciers to the dawn of the space age. Now in its fifth year, this major exhibit features music, artifacts, photos, maps, videos, films, tours and more!

For 2015, the show is titled
The Medway Area Through Time – 10’000 Years of Connections

20150717 Medway Area Through Time

In addition to an amazing collection of historical photographs and documents, there will be videos profiling the Old Cemetery as well as current photos of Port and the Cemetery taken from high above by a drone camera … state of the art – you might call this “From Stone Age to Space Age”.

Of special interest, we will premiere the trailer to our Earth Station Satellite video…currently in production, featuring interviews with employees who worked at the former Teleglobe station in Charleston.

The Port Medway History Show opens with live music and a reception on 17-July-2015 from 5pm-8pm and then continue on 18-Jul  & 19-Jul from 10am until 6pm.

It’s a fascinating look at life along the Medway in the previous century until today. You won’t be disappointed, so please come down to the Warehouse building in Port Medway Lighthouse Park.
