[contributed] “Freedom” and “Belong” are two very powerful words. One conjures images of vast, open spaces, raw expressions of human ideas or emotions, or activities without hindrances or constraints. The other word resonates with the saying, “No man is an island”.
We inherently belong to one another, to a society, even to a place. While belonging is a human necessity as strong as our need for food and shelter, it suggests ties, attachments, restrictions – to ‘belong’ is to be bound.
As humans, we are constantly moving back and forth between our need for autonomy and our need for community. **Are we truly free if we belong to something?** Can these two powerful opposing words genuinely coexist?
