The Port Grocer introduces Friday Night Pub Nights

The Port Grocer Café in Port Medway introduces their Friday Night Pub Nights starting 5-Jun-2015 and then weekly on … well, Fridays over the summer 2015.

“Join us for dinner between 5 and 9pm each Friday night. No reservations, just first come – first serve. In an effort to pull it all off with our small staff, our menu will be limited and changes each week” says Annabelle from TPG. “Each of these evenings will be paired with live music for your listening pleasure!”

The June solstice is known as the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere. The date varies between June 20 and June 22, depending on the year.

June Solstice in 2015 in Nova Scotia, Canada is on Sunday, 21-Jun-2015 at 01:39pm/13:39h ADT.

In the Gregorian calendar the June solstice dates vary. For example, it’s on June 21 in 2015, but on June 20 in 2016. A June 22 solstice will not occur until 2203. The last time there was a June 22 solstice was in 1971.

South Canoe Wind Project

Hurricane Season Fast Facts

[CNN] Here’s a look at what you need to know about the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from 1-Jun to 30-Nov.

Facts:

  • The National Weather Service defines a hurricane as “an intense tropical weather system with well-defined circulation and sustained winds of 74mph (118kmh) or higher.”
  • The peak of the season is from mid-August to late October.
  • In the western Northern Pacific, hurricanes are called typhoons.
  • Similar storms in the Indian Ocean are called cyclones.
  • Hurricanes are rated according to intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
  • The 1-5 scale estimates potential property damage.
  • A Category 3 or higher is considered a major hurricane.
  • A hurricane watch indicates the possibility that a region could experience hurricane conditions within 48 hours.
  • A hurricane warning indicates that tropical-storm-force winds of at least 74 mph are expected within 36 hours.

Bluenose II sails again in early summer/2015

Bluenose II is expected to sail once again early this summer, after four years of costly repairs.

Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan confirmed the news on May 19 after meeting the ship’s crew and getting a tour of the ship from Captain Phil Watson.

“This is a happy day that we’re getting to that point where we can leave the politics aside, leave the public relations aside and really get the Bluenose on the water for all Nova Scotians,” said Minister MacLellan.

Song and Dance with the BFD Band

On Sunday, 24-May-2015 the Bridgewater Fire Department Band begins its 2015 season with a 3pm concert at the new Bridgewater Baptist Church on Glen Alan Drive.

The program will feature a performance of “A Song for Japan,” by Dutch bass trombonist Steven Verhelst. It was inspired by the suffering caused by the 2011 earthquake that devastated parts of Japan.

The band will also play music from “Riverdance.” Kerri Dorey first came to know the piece while serving as a sergeant in Edmonton’s famed Royal Canadian Artillery Band. When she and her husband, Sgt. Yves Gauthier, also an RCA Band member, retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in 2009 and returned to Kerri’s home province, they soon joined the BFD Band and introduced them to the music from Riverdance. Kerri is featured as soprano saxophone soloist in three of the five movements of the suite. Also featured are Jana Hirtle, French horn and percussionist David Eisener.

Other music on the programe includes Finzi’s Lyric Suite, plus music by Beethoven, Julius Fucik and John Williams.

Tropical Cylcone Ana – first of the 2015 Hurricane Season

The first Tropical Storm of the 2015 season has already developed prematurely.

The Tropical Cyclone named Ana formed off the coast of Florida on 7-May-2015 with a  slight chance to affect the South Shore.
Though the storm weakened enough over it’s course to dissipate over the weekend around the Carolinas – its remnants  brought some light rain to the Canadian East Cost on Tuesday, 12-May-2015.
