DYK: Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?
Labor Day weekend is just ahead. For many of us it marks the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of a new school year.
In the United States and Canada, the first Monday of September is a federal holiday, Labor Day. Originally celebrated in New York City’s Union Square in 1882, Labor Day was organized by unions as a rare day of rest for the overworked during the Industrial Revolution.
Watch Kenneth C. Davis’ illustration of the history of Labor Day from Union Square to today.

Super Moon Lunar Eclipse on 27-Sep-2015
A total lunar eclipse following the so-called supermoon will occur on September 27 bringing the rare phenomenon of four consecutive total eclipses – known as a “tetrad” – to an end.
Late in the evening of September 27 the moon will venture very close by our planet and appear much brighter and bigger than usual. After that the supermoon will be completely eclipsed, since the Earth will stand directly between the moon and the sun. After about an hour and a half the celestial body will become visible again.
As a rule, total eclipses do not have a specific order of occurrence. However, when four total eclipses happen in a row in an approximately six month interval, it is called a lunar tetrad (from the Greek word for “four”). Astronomers have calculated that the number of such tetrads varies from century to century. The current century will have eight of them, which along with the 16th, ninth, and 26th centuries will be an absolute maximum.
The next lunar eclipse tetrad is scheduled for April 25, 2032. Continue reading Super Moon Lunar Eclipse on 27-Sep-2015

Who Will You Make Peace With?
September 21st is International Day of Peace (Peace Day)
“Over the next 100 days, let us stand with the millions of people across the world who are suffering the devastating impact of violence and conflict. Let us share ideas and plans for helping and supporting them in their time of dire need.”
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The [UN] General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
Perseid Meteor Shower
The 2015 Perseid meteor shower will peak on August 11, 12 and 13. A new moon on August 14, 2015 will create perfect conditions for watching the meteor shower.
The Perseid meteor shower, one of the brighter meteor showers of the year, occur every year between July 17 and August 24. The shower tends to peak around August 9-13.
The best time to view the Perseids, or most other meteor showers is when the sky is the darkest. Most astronomers suggest that depending on the Moon’s phase, the best time to view meteor showers is right before dawn.

FOXweather website offline
When disaster strikes …
Unrelated to yesterdays outage the FOXweather website was unreachable today, 5-Aug-2015 from 05:40 ADT to about 14:00 ADT and outdated until 16:20 ADT due to a server crash at our hosting provider.
Nothing we could help with but wait it out.
No weather related data was lost.
Thank you for your patience.
FOXweather down due to lightning stroke
Last night a heavy thunderstorm passed over Queens county and quite a few flashes occurred close to FOXweather.
This sadly caused some weather equipment to spark resulting in a station outage from 4-Aug-2015/22:52 ADT to 23:54 ADT.
All systems could be recovered and no data was lost.
However the FOXcam Southwest got damaged and needs replacement. This will take a few days. Stay tuned.
