Winter Solstice usually occurs around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere. Many believe that the year’s latest sunrise and earliest sunset also happen on this day. This is not the case.
If you look at the sunrise and sunset timings for any city in the Northern Hemisphere around the December Solstice, you will notice that the earliest sunset occurs a few days before the Solstice. Similarly, the latest sunrise happens a few days after the solstice.

The Sun is directly overhead of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere during the December Solstice.

The December Solstice occurs when the Sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. In other words, when the North Pole is tilted furthest – 23.5 degrees – away from the Sun.

[Region of Queens Municipality] December 10, 2014, Liverpool, NS: What do Travis Tritt, Zumba, and the Czech Republic all have in common? Over the past three years, all have been part of the events schedule at Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool. Since its grand opening on December 19th, 2011, Queens Place Emera Centre has been host to many events of a local, provincial, and national caliber. This Friday, Dec. 19 from 6 – 9:00 pm, the public is invited to be part of the 3rd Anniversary Celebrations at an open house event that includes a free public skate, musical entertainment by the Queens County Children’s Choir, a free Christmas Fitness class, refreshments being served in the lobby and a visit from Santa Claus.
